The Pukapuka Project

The Pukapuka Project is a Tuakana Teina collaboration developed by local artist Bobby MacDonald to learn his whakapapa and begin his journey to learn Te Reo Māori. In order to do so, he needed to move home back to Whirinaki, Hokianga and he was prepared to do anything!

As the kumara vine spun its yarn around the whānau, word got around to Matua Hirini, a local Te Hikutu kaumatua. He heard about an artist wanting to learn the histories and could paint. From a couple of uncles to another, Bobby was invited up to Whiria maunga and from there The Pukapuka Project was born.

As a way to combat the busy lifestyle he had and in some respects, the declining numbers of our karani matua, Papa Hirini' shared his dreams of creating books for tamariki and whānau, especially those who don't know much about home. Bobby put two and two together and realised that this could be a way where not only could he learn from Papa Hirini' but where he could use his skills as an artist to give back to his whānau whilst still being able to help Papa Hirini' bring his dreams to life.

As the kumara vine grew, so did the need for arts. Next thing we know, The Pukapuka Project created it's first book 'Te Taenga Mai a Kupe' with the rangatahi at TKKM o Hokianga. Unfortunately, the week our very first book 'Te Taenga mai a Kupe' was printed, Papa Hirini passed peacefully in his sleep. In honour of his mahi and time, we carried on the mahi with his son Matua Shane and other kaumatua and more rangatahi through TŪ MAIA TŪ KAHA.

None of which could not be possible without the people of Hokianga.
